An Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge By Ambrose Bierce

â€Å"An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge† was written by Ambrose Bierce. In the story, the main character, Peyton Farquhar, is standing on a railroad bridge that is twenty feet above the water while his wrists are bound behind his back and a noose is tied to his neck to a beam overhead. Two other soldiers from the Northern army, a sergeant and captain, were around him waiting for execution. There were also sentinels standing besides them. Many infantrymen led by their lieutenant were standing assembled before the fort. When the two soldiers finish preparations, they remove the planks that they have been standing. The sergeant salutes his captain, then went on the opposite end of the board supporting Farquhar as the captain steps off. Farquhar stares into the water below, watching a piece of driftwood being carried downstream. He shuts his eyes and heard the sound from his watch, then he open his eyes and jump into the water as the sergeant steps away form the board when captain nods. After this the story started to talk about Farquhar. He was a successful planter who was unable to join the Confederate army, but he still helped the South in some significant way. One evening, he and his wife was sitting on their property when a soldier came up to as for a drink. The soldier was from the Confederate army. Farquhar was informed that North had fixed the railroads and reached the Owl Creek bridge. Also known as the protagonist of the story, he is a thirty-five year old southern planter, land and slave owner, from an Alabama family. This story is divided into three sections which can also be defined as the story’s structural elements. The first section is written by third p erson omniscient point of view, describing what is physically happening to Farquhar. The second section is written by third person limited, because it gives us a few of Farquhar’s thoughts as well as providing us with background information.
